One of the most encouraging trends I see across our industry is the growing commitment to developing future leaders. The businesses that will thrive in the years ahead are not just investing in stores, technology, and operations; they are investing in people.

The mission of the NYACS NextGen Leaders Council is to develop emerging leaders through education, collaboration, purposeful networking, and exposure to the collective wisdom of industry veterans. By leveraging the experience and insight of NYACS members, the Council aims to encourage leadership development, strategic thinking, and responsible stewardship of our industry.

I have been asked to help NYACS launch and develop this program, and the enthusiasm was quite promising when it was announced at the NYACS Annual Convention held May 13–14 in Syracuse, New York.

I talked with several company CEO’s and senior management about this, but the conversation that stayed with me most was with a young Stewart’s Shops employee named Devin Dashnaw.

Just days earlier, Devin had been promoted to store manager. His excitement was infectious. What struck me most was that he spoke with genuine pride about what the promotion meant to him. It was recognition of his hard work, commitment, and potential.

And the idea of being considered a “next generation leader” resonated with him. The opportunity to be part of a community of emerging leaders gave additional meaning to his accomplishment. It reinforced his desire to continue learning, growing, and striving for excellence.

Moments like that remind us why leadership development matters.

The future of our industry will be determined by more than the strategies we discuss in meetings. It will be shaped by people like Devin, individuals who are eager to learn, willing to take on responsibility, and motivated to make a difference in their organizations and communities.

I’ll close by adding that this reinforces Vision Group Network’s commitment behind “sharing today to shape tomorrow.”
